You replaced the final drive four months ago. You paid for the unit, you paid a tech for the better part of two days, and the machine went back to work. Now the same side is whining under load, the track is dragging on turns, and there is a fresh film of gear oil creeping down the sprocket. The second motor is going the same way as the first.
The natural conclusion is that the part was junk. In our experience taking these calls at the Buffalo counter, that is almost never what happened. When a replacement final drive motor dies inside a year, the failure usually started with what was still sitting in the hydraulic system when the new unit was bolted on.
The replacement was fine. The oil that went into it was not.
A final drive motor does not fail quietly. When bearings spall, a piston shoe delaminates, or the swash plate scores, the debris does not stay inside the housing. Case drain flow carries it straight back into the return side of the hydraulic circuit. Fine particles go everywhere the oil goes, which on a track machine means the tank, the cooler, the swivel joint, both travel lines, and the pump itself.
Then the machine gets a new motor and the same oil. Within a few dozen hours, that debris finds the tightest clearances in the system, and the tightest clearances in the system are inside the brand new final drive. Piston to bore clearance in a travel motor is measured in microns. It does not take a visible chunk of metal to score it. It takes grit you would need a light and a clean rag to see at all.
This is the single most common reason a good replacement fails early, and it is the reason we push the flush conversation before we push the sale.
Where debris actually hides after a final drive fails
Draining the tank is not a flush. Here is what a full cleanup has to reach.
The hydraulic tank and suction strainer
Metal settles. Most of the heavy material ends up on the tank floor, well below the drain plug on many machines. If you drop the oil and refill without opening the tank, you have left the worst of it behind. The suction strainer needs to come out, get cleaned or replaced, and get inspected. If it is loaded with glitter, you have your answer about how bad the first failure was.
The case drain line and filter
The case drain is the direct path from the motor's internals to the rest of the machine. Anything that came apart inside the old drive went through this line. Replace the hose if it is old or if you can feel grit when you flex it, and replace the case drain filter without arguing about it. Hoses, cooler and swivel joint
The oil cooler is a maze of small passages and it traps particles that a filter should have caught. Cheap to flush, expensive to ignore. The swivel joint on an excavator has seals and lands that hold debris and slowly release it back into the travel circuit. On a machine with a violent failure, it deserves attention rather than a shrug.
Travel control valve and main pump
If the first failure was severe, spools can be scored and the pump can be carrying damage of its own. A pump that is already making metal will kill any final drive you install, over and over, until someone tests it. What contaminated oil does to a new motor, step by step
The damage follows a predictable order and it is worth knowing so you can catch it early.
First, abrasive particles polish and then score the piston bores. Internal leakage climbs. The motor still works, and the operator notices nothing, because the pump compensates.
Second, case drain flow rises. More oil is bypassing internally instead of doing work. The motor starts running hotter than its twin on the other side, which is the earliest sign you can actually measure with a laser thermometer during a lunch break.
Third, heat thins the oil, the lubricating film gets marginal, and bearing life collapses. Now you get noise under load and a machine that pulls to one side on a straight pull.
Fourth, the seals go. Heat hardens them, debris cuts them, and gear oil starts weeping past the main seal onto the sprocket. By the time you see oil on the outside, the inside has been failing for weeks. We break down the full progression in 7 warning signs your final drive motor is failing.
The whole sequence can run in under 200 hours on a badly contaminated machine. That is the part people underestimate. They assume a second failure inside six months proves a defect, when the timeline is exactly what contamination produces.
How to flush a hydraulic system before installing a final drive motor
This is the procedure our tech line walks customers through. It adds most of a day. It is cheaper than a third motor.
1. Get the old unit off and look at it
Before anything else, drain the gear oil from the failed drive and pour it through a clean filter or a white rag. Fine grey paste means seal and bearing wear. Bright flake means something structural came apart, and you should assume the whole circuit is contaminated. Chunks mean stop, because you are now inspecting the pump too.
2. Drain everything, not just the tank
Tank, lines, cooler, and the low points. Oil left in a cooler core will reintroduce debris the moment the machine warms up.
3. Open the tank and clean it by hand
Pull the access cover. Wipe the floor and the corners with lint free rags. Do not use shop towels that shed. Pull the suction strainer, clean or replace it, and inspect what came off it.
4. Replace every filter in the circuit
Return filter, case drain filter, pilot filter if fitted. Filters are the cheapest line on this entire job and the one people skip most often.
5. Flush the travel circuit with the motors off
Cap the fittings, or better, loop the travel lines into a container and run the pump at low idle so oil moves through the circuit and out, carrying debris with it rather than through your new motor. Some shops use a dedicated flush fluid, some use cheap hydraulic oil as a sacrificial charge. Either works. What does not work is running the new motor as the flushing device.
6. Refill with the correct oil and run it clean
Use the viscosity grade the machine calls for, not what was on the shelf. Run the machine at low load for a short cycle, then change the return and case drain filters again. Yes, again. The second filter change catches what the flush shook loose.
7. Fill the new final drive with the right gear oil

How to verify the system is actually clean
Case drain flow test
The most useful test almost nobody runs. Measure flow out of the case drain line with the motor under a known load and compare it against spec. High flow means high internal leakage, which means either a worn motor or a motor that is being worn. Run it on the new install after 50 hours and you will know whether your flush worked, long before the machine tells you the hard way.
Oil sample and magnet check
Send a sample to a lab if you run a fleet. If you run one machine, a strong magnet in the drained gear oil and a clean rag under the return filter element tell you most of what you need. Cut the old filter open. It is a two minute job that shows you exactly what the system has been circulating.
Temperature comparison
After the first working day, shoot both final drive housings with an infrared thermometer at the same point. A meaningful split between the two sides is your early warning. Left and right should track closely on the same machine doing the same work.
What actually voids a final drive warranty
Worth being blunt, because the disappointment usually comes from a misunderstanding rather than fine print.
A warranty covers manufacturing defects. It does not cover a motor destroyed by contamination the installer introduced, run without gear oil, installed with a collapsed case drain line, or fed by a pump that was already making metal. Every reputable supplier in this industry, including us, works the same way, and every one of them will ask the same questions when a claim comes in: did you flush, did you change the case drain filter, did you fill the gear oil, and can you show us the failed unit.
That is why the flush is worth documenting. Photos of the tank before and after, the old filter cut open, the receipt for the filters. Ten minutes of phone photos turns a disputed claim into an approved one.

The pre-installation checklist
Print this and tape it inside the toolbox lid.
Drain and inspect the gear oil from the failed unit. Note what you find.
Drain the tank, lines and cooler completely.
Open the tank, clean it by hand, service the suction strainer.
Replace the return filter, case drain filter and pilot filter.
Inspect or replace the case drain hose.
Flush the travel circuit with the motors disconnected.
Check the main pump if the failure produced flake or chunks.
Refill with correct viscosity oil.
Install the new drive, fill gear oil to the correct level.
Run 50 hours, then change the return and case drain filters again.
Compare housing temperatures left to right after the first full day.
