A final drive, or hydraulic final drive motor, is the travel motor and planetary gearbox that turns your sprocket. When it goes, the machine stops earning. Each track carries its own final drive. High-pressure oil from the main pump drives a piston motor, and a planetary reduction gearset converts that fast, low-torque rotation into the slow, heavy torque the sprocket needs to move twenty tons of machine through mud. Two-speed units add a travel shift. Because the whole assembly sits at track level, it lives in grit, water and impact, which is why final drives wear out long before the rest of the hydraulic system.

Machine model alone is not enough. The same excavator model can leave the factory with two different travel motors depending on build year, undercarriage width and whether the machine is a single or two-speed unit. Three numbers settle it:
Wipe the housing and look for a stamped number on the motor body or the mounting flange. That number is what our catalogue is indexed on.
Serial breaks are the single most common reason a drive arrives and will not bolt up. Have it ready before you order.
Count the sprocket bolt holes and measure the pitch circle. If you send us a photo of the flange and the old unit, our parts specialist team will match it against the manufacturer parts books rather than guessing from the model name.
Owners looking for final drive repair services usually want the cheapest way back to work, not a rebuild for its own sake. A reseal is worth it when the damage is limited to the duo-cone seal and the gear oil is still clean. Once metal has circulated, the bearings, the planetary set and the piston motor have all been through the same grit, and a rebuild puts used parts back into a housing that will be opened again within the year. Used final drives carry an unknown service history and no coverage, and aftermarket final drives of unclear origin often use softer gear material that fails under the loads a full-size excavator applies.
