Caterpillar carried the same drive across several model families, and the D, D2 and D3 series share more hardware than the badges suggest. Start from the machine and confirm with the casting number:

A compact track loader works its travel circuit far harder than an excavator does. The machine steers by driving one track against the other, so the drives take a torque reversal on every turn, and on a tight jobsite that happens hundreds of times an hour. Three things then decide how long the unit lasts.
Track tension comes first. An over-tightened track loads the bearing on the drive hub continuously, and that bearing is not designed to carry a side load all day. We covered the measurements in track tension and CTL final drive damage.
Gear oil comes second. These drives hold a small oil volume in a housing that runs hot and sits in whatever the site is made of. Water entry past a tired duo-cone seal turns the oil grey, and grey oil takes the bearings out within a few hundred hours. Our final drive gear oil change interval is the cheapest maintenance on the machine.
The case drain line comes third. If it is blocked, kinked or plumbed back under pressure, the motor casing pressurises and blows the shaft seal. The mechanism is explained in what a case drain filter does.
Both drives on a track loader have done the same hours under the same conditions, so when one gives up the other is rarely far behind. On a machine that earns daily, the second failure costs another round of downtime that the first replacement could have absorbed. Pull the gear oil from the good side before deciding: if it is grey or carrying glitter, replace the pair.
Each unit ships as a complete assembly, motor and planetary drive together, ready to bolt on. There is no core charge and nothing to send back afterwards. Fill it with the specified gear oil before the machine works, run it with no load and check for leaks, then set the track to specification with a gauge rather than by eye. Caterpillar revised travel motor specifications inside the same model designation more than once, so two 289D loaders built a year apart can take different drives. The model name gets you to the right family, the machine serial number and the casting number get you to the right part. That is why every model page in the list above shows the part numbers it covers, and why we ask for a photo of the flange before shipping anything on a machine we have not seen.
Not every limping track loader needs a drive. A weak track can come from the pump, the two-speed solenoid or the drive motor itself, and each has a different bill.
